Why I Pay for Claude

Why do I pay for Claude? There are more AIs than anyone can keep track of now, and the leaderboard flips daily — arguing about which model is “best” has become a job in itself. I’ve paid for several of them.

They all talk well

Every one of them gives smart answers. Good writing, broad knowledge, pleasant conversation. But give them actual company work and they split apart. Most AIs end at the answer. They can’t touch the files on my computer, so moving, applying and filing the output was still my job. Like a brilliant employee who refuses to actually work.

So my criterion changed

That’s when it clicked: the question isn’t “which AI is smartest.” It’s “which AI actually works on my computer.” The daily intelligence race isn’t worth chasing. The only thing that matters is whether my workload actually shrinks.

The rankings change every day. My criterion doesn’t: does it work on my machine?

Three reasons it was Claude

  1. Claude Code works directly with what’s on my computer. It opens files, organizes them, produces them. The output is work, not an answer.
  2. The paid tier is built for business out of the box. Documents and emails come with solid fundamentals already in place — I only add our company’s substance, and it’s working from day one. Other AIs needed to be taught everything first.
  3. The tools keep arriving. Skills and features inside the subscription keep updating — one payment, and the toolbox keeps growing.

Everything this week ran on that choice

On this foundation I organized my companies fast and started delegating fast. In fact, everything I wrote about this week — agents doing sales, teaching an AI my company, co-writing this blog with an assistant — all of it ran on top of this one decision. The real return on the subscription isn’t the features. It’s that the time spent choosing tools became time spent working with one.

If you want a conversation partner, any AI will do. If you want to hand over work, pick the one that works on your computer.

So which are you getting from your AI right now — answers, or work?
